1974-1976
Formation of the Centennial Band
In 1974, our community band was formed to celebrate the nation’s bicentennial, bringing together local musicians for the first time, under the direction of Fred Blake.
1980
First Major Concert

PORT CHARLOTTE – The Centennial Band will begin its weekly concert series Sunday at the Port Charlotte Cultural Center Centennial Hall at 2:30pm. The group, which is open to all members of the community, will perform a primarily patriotic program as well as some classical selections. The concert is free.
1991
became Charlotte county concert band
The band has had many conductors of the years, Ray Durkee, Herb Laswell, Alan Kilspie, John Johnson, and Barbara Saffron. Barbara was a teacher for many years in Charlotte County and encouraged students in the music programs throughout Charlotte County. She started a scholarship fund for band students.
2010
DeVere Fader Hired as Conductor
DeVere Fader was the director of the James E. Buffan Gold Coast Band in Boynton Beach from 1991 until 2000. He served as conductor of the North Port Concert Band from 2000 until 2010 when he joined the Charlotte County Concert Band as conductor.
2015
Bob Miller Hired as conductor
Bob Miller was the assistant conductor of the North Port Concert Band, a member of the Venice Concert Band, and conductor of the First Brass of Sarasota. He received his bachelor’s degree in music education from Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, and his master’s degree in music history and literature and his music supervisor’s certification from Temple University in Philadelphia.
2017
move to punta gorda
We held our first major concert, drawing an audience of over 500 people and establishing our presence in the community.
2020
path through pandemic
We had to cancel the final concerts of the 2019-2020 concert season, and cancel the entirety of our 2020-2021 concert season. With the help of friends and family and a dedicated board, we emerged from the pandemic a leaner and more nimble organization.
2024
celebrating 50 years of music
The Charlotte County Concert Band celebrated 50 years of music in 2024. They also rebranded their main musical group to The Symphonic Winds of Charlotte County. Aligning their name to be more in-line with their musical evolution into more complex and challenging musical repertoire.

“I joined in 1979. After my family moved to Port Charlotte in 1974, I went to college at USF in Tampa. I heard about the Band from my brother who played the trumpet with them for a while in 1975-76. – Member for 45+ years.”
